Lifesong - Review

This exhibition of abstract paintings by artist Elizabeth Love (nee Acheson) of Timaru, reveal a deep vein of Christian faith that inspires and translates the artist’s poet soul.

There is a sense of atmosphere about these works; of mood, of storm and brooding, of depth to fathom, of deeply rich colour and textured surfaces that might be read lightly like Braille, with the fingers.

The exhibition ‘presents the gleanings of memory past and present’. Key elements show up again and again; text in the form of scripture, prayer, song and lyric, and ideas of a new land, landscape and a sense of place within it.

The Nunc Dimittis series stands out. They refer to the song of Simeon, used as a canticle (a Christian hymn or chant) in various liturgies.

Luke 2:29 – 32 elaborates and refers to the sighting of the Christ child by the old prophet Simeon, and his readiness at that point to depart, to leave, to be dismissed from this life because he had seen and held the promised Christ. His wait was over. Scripture also conveys an unwritten sense of settling and settlement.

The Common Prayer series carry ideas further. ‘In the Bonds of Love we Meet’, and ‘Let it Rain’ are Influenced by the Common Prayer Book of Anglican up-bringing. Works are linked to this land, Aotearoa, to its vision and its unifying national anthem.

The Common Prayer Book was a vital link between the Northern Ireland homeland of her parents and the new home they would eventually make in Aotearoa NZ. ‘The prayer book gave them a sense of cover and commonality amongst other Anglicans; they could go anywhere in the world and be at home’, she says.

The Kakanui series is a place where ocean meets sky and red ladders appear in the landscape. The work ‘When Jesus called to Peter at Kakanui’ suggests new insight occurred there.

Design is a key element in Elizabeth Love’s work. It brings a sense of measure and placement of the artist’s language of marks. These show up as deft sweeps of colour; of semi circles, banners, crosses and other motifs.

Ideas for new works seem to be constantly arriving. These are thought about, developed and presented though they may take a number of years to resolve.

Elizabeth has dedicated Lifesong to the memory of her father.

The Great South Canterbury Youth Art Expo 2009 - reflections

Several people have asked how the gr8 sth cantabury yth art expo 2k9 went. Overall it was such a worthwhile experience for those involved with most of the artworks selling.

Some of the art came from workshops held for youth who are currently out of mainstream education. Workshops were held from August - October 09 by Sandie Davies, Christeena MacDonald & myself.

Creating work together in a group, around a table, is always a special time.

Painting is an extension of man's means of communication.
As such, it's pure, difficult, and wonderful.

A lot of your artwork on the website is Mixed Media. What does that mean?

Mixed media is the term given to work that just doesn’t use one medium – other than paint I use things like tissue paper patterns, oil sticks, graphite, shellac, water-colour pencils, ink, pieces of my dried up paint (paint-skins), torn hand-coloured ‘scraps’…

Eric Carle is an artist I admire. He hand paints tissue papers for his collages. I like to study his illustrations & see how he has put them together.

What makes you enjoy being an artist? What makes your artwork so special?

I believe we are all created for a wonderful purpose, as written in Psalm 139.

13 For you created my inmost being;

I enjoy working as an artist because it feels like my perfect job-fit. When I’m working, sometimes I will jump around because I’m s-o happy with the way the colours are! I’ve never felt that way about any other work I’ve done…

I think what makes an artwork special is when people connect with it. Like when people buy a painting. There will be something about the painting that made them remember a time that has passed…

How did you get into art and what made you interested? (Did someone influence you?)

I’ve always enjoyed the process of making art. I remember the first drawing I did at school. It was of a bus. I didn’t have to catch a bus to school, because I just lived up the street, but perhaps I had been read stories about children catching buses to school! That is how my art works...I read a story or a poem, I listen to someone speaking, I see something...I think about it & the thoughts come out as symbolic images. In my studio I still have one of my childhood books: Mother Goose – A Collection of Nursery Rhymes by Brian Wildsmith. Sometimes I look at the colours for inspiration.

My mother especially influenced me when I was young. She worked as an embroiderer so always had lovely fabrics around & hung out with other ladies who also liked to create. We had art in our house – I liked looking at it, thinking that an actual person had made it. It’s the same way I look at art now – I look closely for the brush marks of the artist, I think about the materials that have been used...

My mother encouraged me with my art-making & took me to see exhibitions. I remember one exhibition in particular...the artist had made some large abstracts using a series of dots. I don't think I had seen work like that before. My mother didn't like them, but I sure did!

Recently I attended the Parachute Music Festival. What a great event! If you have ever thought of going, GO.

I have recently finished three years of extra-mural study with The Learning Connexion in Wellington, New Zealand. My most recent mentor has been Susan Knaap. I have appreciated her speaking with me about art & creativity matters & often think about our conversations as I'm crossing the railway bridge on my way to work.

The use of sewing patterns in all their glory is an important element that has emerged in my work & Susan has been pivotal in my initial understanding of their symbolism.

Heartland Sculpture Challenge

The most awesome art event is happening in South Canterbury! Currently nine sculptures are being installed on pre-selected sites. Sculptor Henri Stein is directing the event for theADT Aoraki Creative Cluster.

The blurb...
Sculptors have been given $1000 toward the cost of their sculpture and will go into win a people choice award, decided by public vote through texting from the site, and the judges art award. Both winners will receive $10,000 each in prize money from the competition's sponsor Meridian Energy.

The remaining sculpture is auctioned with the sponsor of the site getting the first option to buy it and gift it to the city.

This piece has been reworked experimentally & has gone to live in Wellington. It is interesting how some works are easily executed & others are much laboured over.

The grid & lettering/abstracted marks have been in my work at least 20 years. In this piece you may be able to make out the word 'Soul' in the darker lines. "My soul knoweth" has been written a number of times into the paint using a palette knife.

I believe in an intelligent Creator…the grids that reoccur in my work are a sign to the viewer of the work of a mind, not randomness. (I wear a turbo smaragdus operculum (cats eye) ring as a symbol of the Great Designer's work.)

It was the crossroads…having come from New Zealand & started painting late in life I had to get as quickly as possible to the crossroads of information about painting & the paintings in museums because you can’t learn about painting in books, you have to actually see the paintings & then you have to try & copy them…you have to try to do them & fail & gradually trial & error move towards your own utterance…so I had to be in New York. We’re talking the 60’s - you wouldn’t have to be to be in New York now - you could paint in Auckland or Wellington now. I think.

When I was young I remember being mesmerised by the art of Brian Wildsmith in his book Mother Goose - A Collection of Nursery Rhymes. I still have my book...it looks pretty well read. I keep it in my studio & reference it at times for his use of colour. I am still captivated.

For the first hour only of opening night, the exhibition will run as a silent auction.

My work has been described as that of a Colourist with canvases often reminiscent of quilts or tapestries, with lavish, brilliant colour. I work in an abstract expressionist way making thoughts visible through layers of thick and thin colour over textured surfaces. My formal visual art training has been design-based with a Certificate in Display & Advertising from Waikato Polytechnic & later tutoring by Auckland calligrapher, Alison Furminger. I am currently mentored long-distance by artist Susan Knaap as I work towards a Diploma of Art & Creativity (Honours) through The Learning Connexion, Wellington. As an artist I value serendipitous learning & long hours.

I acknowledge the work of Plunket in my life when I was a young mother living in Waiouru. The paintings I have chosen to exhibit are from a series titled “Now I Lay me Down to Sleep”. I imagine them to hang in a child’s room as a form of blessing…the painted quilt with its many coloured pieces, moons & stars symbolises the way in which a parent will cover their child for sleep, both physically & spiritually; tucking the child in with a story from colourful, imaginary lands, songs & prayers. A beautiful time that passes so quickly...

Currently I am working a little from a studio based upstairs in Timaru's Royal Arcade. The semi-enclosed arcade has the most excellent acoustics & I enjoy working there listening to the sounds of people walking through.

This Friday a market environment is happening over the lunch period & a few musicians will be playing. There may also be a couple of artists working so I might take my easel down & join them.

I've just finished making 36 wedding invitations for a friend.

The white card was initially splashed in an abstract expressionist way with slightly off-white paint. Collage elements were added. Inside, details of the wedding are on a folded paper insert. Computer-generated font - Rabiohead.

I have never used mulberry (saa) paper before - it is lovely to work with & I will explore its use further. I bought the paper at Pure Impressions in Timaru & they took the time to show me how easy it is to wet the fibres & pull it apart...very much appreciated.

Details

Project on the House has just finished in Timaru. It involved a partial house make-over by a group of Timaru businesses as a way of recognising the community-orientated work of an individual/family who have given selflessly to others. Nominations were called for.

The project was managed by my artist friend Polly Rowe who accepted my offer to paint a commissioned piece for the winner.

I met with the winner Bev Bennett & the result of speaking with her is the above work titled "Legacy". Once Bev settles back into her new-look home I will speak with her again to explain the symbolism in the work, gleaned from our meeting. (As with any commissioned piece, she has the option to return it to me after living with it for a while.)

A series of events lead to this commissioned work for an Australian visitor to New Zealand. The title "Dry & Thirsty Land" references
Psalm 63:1...
O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;

This scripture was her "Life Verse". I did not find this out until later, when she was back in Sydney with the piece.

The only brief for the commission was that I prayerfully considered the work.

This work recently sold to a mother to hang in her daughter's bedroom. I wrote to her & said...

I am so pleased that you will have the painting. I imagined it would hang in a child’s room as a type of blessing…so it has worked out perfectly. If you look closely you will see a piece of dressmaking tissue. It is a piece for the back of a garment. This references the way I liked to sleep as a baby & later as a child – on my front. The covering of the quilt with all sorts of colours, moons & stars is symbolic of the way in which a mother covers her child for sleep, tucking the child in with a story from colourful imaginary lands, & songs. Just a beautiful time that passes so quickly...

Death of a Blogger

I was saddened to read of the death of blogger Dodderyoldfart, writer of the blog Rest Area 300m, aka Simon Lindsay. I enjoyed his humourous writing style. Through him I now have an appreciation of those who take care of our roads as he wrote about his observations as part of a small road maintenance crew looking after about 200km of SH3 on the West Coast of the North Island, NZ. I now see myself as a potential killer as I approach road work teams. Through him my eyes have been opened to the abstract qualities of road signs & markings. Thank you, Mr.D.

We often pass those men in the bright high-vis jackets, and give them not a thought.
I'm a working man too. A man in dirty overalls and steel-toed boots. I'd like to think that my working garb does not define me. Doddery's certainly didn't define him. He was well read, a thinker, a philosopher of the back-hoe.

Taking photos of my work sometimes helps me to judge if the piece is finished. In this case I look at this image & think...I wonder what adding red to the line of pattern that runs through the middle of the work would look like? Sometimes I will use the computer to make the proposed changes. In the studio I will just lay a bit of coloured paper down.

This was my first oil painting...& my first painting on canvas. My friend, Timaru artist Christeena MacDonald, stretched some heavy canvas onto an old frame & said to go home & paint something. Up until then I had been working on paper with a focus on pointed-brush lettering. I remember enjoying the buttery oils & the wonderful smell...

I have never signed this piece to discourage myself from selling it.

This brings me to the reason for this post...
I have been tagged by American Artist, Casey Klahn. Casey likens a tag to chain letters. It is a way for bloggers to increase links. Thanks to Casey I have had a lot of new visitors to my site. Welcome!

What I have to do is write 7 random facts/habits about me...what will I write?
1. My first oil painting, as pictured above etc, etc. Make that facts 1-3.
4. A (bad) habit...I do not remember to watch my vehicle temperature gauge when driving & that is why I no longer have a van to transport my larger paintings around in. A very recent happening.
5. I wear a lot of black.
6. My first career at 18 was with the NZ Army RNZDC as a dental assistant. I would like to make contact again with two of my Majors - at Papakura, Simon Holdgate; at Ohakea, Ross Murray. These two men were supportive of my art when I was in the military. Ross even made me take an aptitude test to make me see what he knew my strengths were. Simon commissioned a piece of work for his surgery in Waiouru.

Although this work has been created as a triptych, each piece is able to stand alone as an abstract mark. This enables the work to be symbolically 'scattered' among friends/family.

New Zealand celebrates Mothers Day today. This work was commissioned by a mother so she could give a piece to each of her three adult children today...the youngest is in her first year out of high school.

This piece was purchased by a couple who are part of an art group. The work will spend two months with each member of the group & finally return to the original purchasers. Tonight is the unveiling as the group gathers together.

May the work bring many blessings as it journeys.

If I ever see this painting again I must get some decent photos! It is in Picton...address unknown. It was the first piece of my Mary's Window series.

So far I do not have a statement about the series as I am not yet sure of the extent of ideas…
Initially the works were in response to seeing the art of Mary Horn for the first time. Mary is a Dominican Sister who still lives & works from Teschmakers, North Otago. The large works I saw were very dark with flashes of gold. There was one small piece on paper…a window.

From the fourth piece in the series onwards the lyrics of Dave Dobbyn’s Roll Away from his Available Light album are also an influence.

Symbols that are coming through in the pieces are: the opening of windows/curtains (which can be barriers), A-Z/Alpha & Omega, quilting – cutting & piercing.

I have been in contact with Mary about the works & after meeting with her will write the series statement & perhaps paint others...hopefully this may happen tomorrow as Mary will read her poetry at the York Street Gallery's First Birthday celebrations.

I had a look around the Timaru Cenotaph late tonight when no-one else was around...just a few man-made poppies scattered around & little bunches of flowers wrapped in paper.

That's finished for now.

The work makes reference to my childhood & is named after my mother - M.I.A. Among other things it symbolises the covering of a child with a bright quilt for sleep...love, prayers, blessings.

The piece was delivered to York Street Gallery today...to be hung in time for the birthday celebrations next Friday. Clever me being a week ahead of myself!

Today I have been reworking Mia...just adding a bit more blue...a lot more actually. The York Street Gallery is celebrating its first birthday tomorrow so I'm taking in a few extra works...reworked Mia will be one of them.

This piece was purchased by a local pharmacist. He has it hanging at his workplace in the shop area. Sometimes I visit with scripts.

I usually find it a little weird when I see my work again. I know it's mine but I can't really believe it.

I have been working as an administrator for a few weeks...just a short-term contract to cover planned absence. It has been fun working alongside friends again. I had thought that my painting would continue on pretty much as normal...was I wrong! There is still time to paint, but the headspace is not there...

I've just had a call from Jane Blackmore, my TLC mentor. Perfect timing as she was able to discuss & laugh about the situation with me.

Today was my birthday so I spent a little time alone at one of my favourite places around here - the Opihi River, opposite the Stratheona Huts. As I was walking along beside the river I saw something brilliant white in the distance. I wasn't sure what it was until it started flying. I hoped & hoped that it would fly past me, & it did...a huge kotuku with slow-flapping wings, croaking in flight. How awesome! (As usual) I did not have my camera so just waved as it flew by.

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made:
marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
